Scope and Contents

The collection consists of background research materials gathered for issues of the Columbian Newspaper. Included in the materials are correspondence, clippings, press releases, photographs, government documents, publications, reports, flyers, legal pleadings, and handwritten notes. Hambright and Hoachlander Photograph Collection

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 30 4x5 inch black and white photographs each with a corresponding negative. In 1987 photographers Anice Hoachlander and Harlan Hambright shot these images to document buildings on the 500 block of 9th Street NW and the 900 block of E Street NW in northwest Washington, D.C. These buildings were torn down to make way for a larger office building.

Mary E.A. Mitchell Collection

Scope and Contents The collection consists of 86 packages of strip negatives. Some packages contained multiple negatives bringing the total number of strip negatives to 97. The strip negatives contain between one and seven images, with 372 total images in the collection. Stereoview Photograph Collection

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 45 stereoviews depicting various scenes and persons from the District of Columbia. Stereoviews, also called “stereocards” or “stereotypes,” are two nearly identical card-mounted images placed side by side. When viewed through a stereo viewer or stereograph, they give the image a three-dimensional effect. They were very popular from 1854 through the mid-1930s and often illustrate historic and exotic locations.

Washington, D.C. Postcard Collection

Scope and Contents The earliest postcards in the collection date from circa 1898 with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. The collection consists almost exclusively of imprinted (ink) postcards but also includes “real-photo” (gelatin silver) variety as well.
